LIMINAL SPACE: MEETING AT THE CROSSROADS
Daily life consists of liminal spaces, a moment in time of being in-between and transitioning to what has yet to come: waiting for a friend, riding the bus, having a smoke, etc. The scenarios are endless. Through the use of interference design, our group attempts to fill up these ambiguous spaces by creating a solution that will stimulate human interaction in public spaces.
We used the Mutsaardplein as our transitional setting and came up with an idea on how to catch the attention of a passerby. We spread out questions written on flashy green cardboards around the square. The questions are formulated in a way so that there are only two possible answers. These answers will lead the passersby to the next question and will eventually create a path that leads towards the centre of the square. In the centre is a board with the questions on it where people can share their answers.
This interference stimulates a reaction in people such as sharing common glances of confusion or sparking a simple conversation concerning the questions at hand. Through this design interference, we have created a space in time where people share a common experience that brings them closer to the crossroads of interaction.
