Away - An autism-friendly city

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, however, there’s often nothing about their appearance that sets them apart from other people. This invisibility can cause misunderstandings which lead to anxiety for the person with ASD. People with ASD want everything planned, visualised, and predictable. Today’s city isn’t any of these things.

Away enables people with ASD to experience the city independently with encouragement from the environment. Our main goal was to design a city that works together to build an inclusive atmosphere. The needs of a person with ASD are almost opposite to the characteristics of a city. A city is loud, busy, and fast while people with ASD need a quiet and patient place where they can gather their senses. With Away we turn the city into a predictable place.
